BPA can disrupt painted turtles’ brain development could be a population health concern

By Herp News

Often, aquatic environments such as rivers and streams become reservoirs for BPA, affecting turtle habitats. Last year, a team of researchers determined that BPA can disrupt sexual function in painted turtles. Now, the team has shown that BPA also can induce behavioral changes in turtles, reprogramming male turtle brains to show behavior common in females. Researchers worry this could lead to population declines in painted turtles.

Living with reptiles: Garbage Truck Turtle, Fashionable Dragons and a new adoption

Photo: AOL.com
One thing that ties all these stories together is that they are pet stories. They show that reptiles are loved parts of a family, something we already know! Each time we take the illusion away that reptiles are scary, we make headway in every single legal battle and we create allies.

We are still trying to figure out exactly how the tortoise got into the trash, but it is amazing how many people came together to help get Zuma, the 90-year-old pet tortoise, home and safe!

Staff immediately stepped in, tracking the location of the truck likely carrying the much-loved tortoise.
Joiner rushed to the waste center, and, with the help of city workers, sorted through the roughly 1,000 bags in the truck’s bin using thermal imaging camera.

You can see the rest of the story, including a video at aol.com.

Pet fashion shows are nothing new! My own dogs were the Master of Ceremonies at one in my town in fact, but none of my reptiles have ever been in one. I know Tom Crutchfield has more lizard costumes than some people have dog clothes, so it comes as no surprise to me that a pet Bearded Dragon took the championship! Logan West and his pet Bearded Dragon took the youth division with this awesome team costume. For the full story and to see all the fashionable pets, pop over to Seguingazette.com. “Clear the shelter” adoption events are very common! It brings a ton of people into their local humane society to look at a new pet. They are warm and fuzzy stories that always give you those feels inside, you know the warm and fuzzies? Yeah… However when was the last time you heard someone squeal about their new pet iguana adopted at a “clear the shelter” event? That stops now, here is your warm and fuzzy good feeling ending.

After learning about Clear the Shelters in an email from the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League, Henderson-O’Keefe decided go to the shelter in advance Thursday with Peirman and her daughter, Eldie, 12, to look around.
That’s when Peirman met Charizard, an iguana named after a Pokemon character.
“He really responded to the iguana,” Henderson-O’Keefe said.
Peirman scratched Charizard’s neck to remove a layer of skin she was shedding, and Henderson-O’Keefe said when her son picked up Charizard, the iguana crawled onto his shoulder.

The story is well worth making it a part of your pick-me-up today. To read the full article and see the video, head on over to NBCWashington.com. …read more

Maine to enact new regulations impacting reptile keepers

A burrowing frog floating quietly between the bleating calls.
Despite overwhelming support against the law change from residents and pet owners in the state, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife has passed a rule increasing fines for illegal wildlife ownership, making it harder for those who wish to breed, buy or sell, new ownership restrictions for exotic pets and lastly a third party contractor will be in charge of inspections.

From Centralmaine.com:

Before that vote, opinions about the rule changes were mixed. In a public comment period earlier this summer, the agency received a couple hundred letters, said Nate Webb, a biologist with the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

At a public hearing in June, a few Mainers and non-Mainers supported the changes, arguing they will ensure animals are treated better while in captivity.

But a greater number of attendees at the June hearing — including breeders, collectors, rehabilitators and researchers — expressed concern about the proposal .

We will be watching closely to see when the full rules are posted. Shame on Maine, your residents spoke up and you did not listen.

The Aztec treasure unearthed: New earth snake species discovered in Mexico

By Herp News

A new gem has been added to the vast treasure of Mexican reptiles. Scientists recently described a new and strikingly colored species of earth snake from the mountains of Puebla and Veracruz in central Mexico. These burrowing snakes are seldom encountered and, consequently, have been poorly studied. Furthermore, several species have restricted distribution, making them particularly vulnerable to extinction.

Many endangered species face long waits for protection

By Herp News

The Endangered Species Act was enacted by Congress in 1973 to protect species threatened with extinction. To receive protection, a species must first be listed as endangered or threatened. A two-year timeline for the process was established in 1982 by a Congressional amendment to the ESA. Researchers found that many species are encountering much longer wait times. They believe that delays could lead to less global biodiversity.

Tiger sharks opt for scavenging on dead and dying sea turtles as a feeding strategy

By Herp News

Researchers found behavioral evidence that tiger sharks prefer to opportunistically scavenge on dead or weakened green turtles rather than actively hunting healthy individuals despite more opportunities to do so. The study, conducted off the coast of Australia during the turtle nesting season, also found the behavior of healthy green turtles suggests that they do not perceive tiger sharks as a major threat during nesting season.

‘Red gene’ in birds, turtles suggests dinosaurs had bird-like color vision

By Herp News

A gene for red colour vision that originated in the reptile lineage around 250 million years ago has resulted in the bright red bird feathers and ‘painted’ turtles we see today, and may be evidence that dinosaurs could see as many shades of red as birds, and perhaps even displayed more red than we might think.

Sexual rivalry may drive frog reproductive behaviors

By Herp News

Biologists have long thought that some frogs evolved to mate on land instead of in water to better guard eggs and tadpoles from predation. New research now suggests that mating on land in many species might be a strategy male frogs use to ensure that their own DNA gets passed on, instead of their rivals’. Sexual selection may trump natural selection in the evolution of these reproductive behaviors.

Japanese tadpoles can live and grow in natural hots springs, or onsen, with water temperatures as high as 46.1oC (115oF). Living in onsen may benefit the tadpoles’ immune systems, speed their growth, and allow the tadpoles to survive on small volcanic islands where there are few other natural sources of fresh water.

Big Bend or Bust!

A Texas patch-nosed snake made a cameo appearance then retreated.
It was 3PM when Jake finished loading his necessities in the Honda. This would be the first long trip for the CRV and I was hoping it would prove as trusty as the old ’96 RAV that had only recently “bitten the dust.” I-10 was only an hour away and once in the westbound lanes of that highway we would really be on our way. By the time we had reached the Alabama state line dusk was nigh. Traffic was fast through Mississippi, then Louisiana followed. Over the Mississippi River and across the 18+ mile long causeway that spans the Atchafalaya Basin. Finally we rolled into Texas, made it uneventfully through Houston and continued on to San Antonio—and beyond. The world turned, the sun rose then disappeared behind an ever thickening layer of clouds. A short foray in Kinney County produced a pretty and feisty bullsnake and followed by a fleeting view of a Texas patchnose. Under the cloud cover we again moved westward. Del Rio was behind us and finally Comstock, our first real destination was on the horizon. The motel beckoned. Lunch at the C&J beckoned equally persistently. Then it was time for a long overdue nap.
